The development of the new Ninja ZX-6R started with a clean slate: pure performance offered by one 599 cm? supersport model instead of two like the years before. Born for the track, the new Ninja ZX-6R corners like bikes of half its displacement but possesses a meaty mile-wide powerband. The Ninja ZX-6R's all-new ultra-high-rpm engine with polished intake ports churns out way more mid-range torque than its predecessors. The result is a nice fat powerband with a linear power curve, for hard-hitting acceleration across the rev range. Though size and growth figures are not available for this nascent market, companies like Suzuki, which is launching the Hayabusa 1300 cc bike, and Honda, which is launching the CBR 1000 RR, are anticipating huge demand.

This despite the fact that German bike-maker BMW called off an arrangement, signed several years ago, with the Munjals to sell power bikes owing to negligible sales.

The Harley, meanwhile, is facing a roadblock in introducing its range of bikes here as the Indian government has refused to cut duties on the bike. The same government has, however, relaxed its emission norms on the bike and also allowed the company to set up a dealer network in the country.

Last year, media reports suggested that current leader in the performance bike segment, Bajaj Auto, was looking to buy out Ducati Motor Holding in an effort to build its own brand in the lucrative European market.

The Pune-based company, however, later bought a near-controlling stake in Austrian bike company KTM.

The Rapom V8 motorcycle, which produces over 1000 bhp, was built by British engineer Nick Argyle. It is powered by a supercharged Dodge V-8 engine. Running on alcohol, the 1000 bhp returns just four miles per gallon, and it's mileage log usually only covers the 10 mile journey to a local drag racing strip. The Mission One EV electric sports bike got a proper unveiling at this week's Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED) conference, and boy does this baby exude power. Mission Motors says the motorcycle's got an 150 MPH top speed and 100 foot-pounds of torque at any point between 0 and 6,500 RPM. That's a good deal faster than the Electric Motorsport GPR-S, which tops out at a now-paltry 100 MPH. The lithium-ion battery keeps it running for 150 miles, and charge time is targeted for under 2 Hours at 240V (8 Hours at 120V). Its stylish form factor comes from famed industrial designer Yves Behar. Yeah, we're excited, too, but here's the part where you flinch: the deathly silent super-scooter will first show up in 2010 with a 50-unit limited edition run costing $68,995 apiece. A more affordable model will be announced sometime this summer. If you've got a need for this much muted speed, be prepared to mortgage a house or two.

In 2007 Kawasaki released an updated version of the Z1000. The bike features a detuned version of the relatively outdated Kawasaki ZX-9R engine. This detuning, in addition to the design of the exhaust, provides less top end compared to the super-sport ZX-9R engine, but more low to mid rpm range, giving a stock '07-08 Z1000 a top speed of about 149mph and 0-60mph acceleration in about 2.9 seconds, with about 125bhp at 10,000rpm.
